The Mehta Boys: A Heartfelt Tale of Love & Belonging

Grief is an emotion which everyone deals with in his or her own way. It is an emotion which needs healing from within and a little help from the outside world. Boman Irani's directorial debut, 'The Mehta Boys', deals with this emotion while also portraying the dysfunctional father-son relationship in the most charming way.

'The Mehta Boys' is the story of Shiv and Amay both of whom are grieving the loss of Shiv's wife. Shiv was supposed to leave for the USA to live with his daughter but in a plot twist, he has to stay with Amay for the next 48 hours. Their encounters in those two days, some hard-hitting conversations and swinging between love, hate & irritation, forms the rest of the story.

Avinash Tiwary shines as Amay and portrays the conflict through his eyes in the most beautiful way. His inability or struggle to prove himself as a good son and a good architect is channeled with his silence which later has an outburst in a most beautiful scene of the movie wherein Shiv (played brilliantly by Boman Irani), gives him a reality check.

Shiv is struggling with the grief of losing his wife and is trying hard to understand his son but without bridging the gap intentionally. He wants to be connected with his roots & his home but finds it extremely painfully to leave all that and go to the USA. The most heart wrenching scene is when Shiv sees a photo of Amay with his sister & mother, but he is missing from the picture. That subtly indicates the distance between the father & the son and their dysfunctional relationship as they find it awkward to adjust to each other.

'The Mehta Boys' is a feel-good movie which starts a little slow and struggles with pace in between but captures the audiences' heart and has them hooked till the end. It has some beautifully captured moments of sadness & happiness which makes it a worth-watching movie!
